Russian Gulch, CA

Russian Gulch State Park, Mendocino, CA

ocean swell thuds,
breath fogs, cold feet and hands—
archway at dawn

slow foam
the occasional slide
nothing moves but kelp

pair of ravens
float across the river mouth,
black on black on gray

I have to say the last verb in the world I would think to use to describe swell would be 'thud'. Okay, you were there and maybe it did thud but it doesn't sound right.

Maybe "boom" would be a better word in the haiku, but it's also the more familiar and predictable word. Or so it seemed to me at the time, though.
